Tomahawks
Bested by Kerry Blues in Conference Game
by
Bill Pike
Oh, what a wonderful flying blue horse—
You’ve probably seen him before.
Perhaps while we weep,
Mick Cleary has sweeped
With the ball the length of the floor.
We lost a basketball game to a real top notch Northern Conference
team, the Kerry Blues from St. Mary’s Academy of Glens Falls,
last Friday evening….
They
played like champions, and champions they will probably be. With
three remaining Conference games left, the inspired Kerries were
ready and waiting for a Tomahawk team prepped by the string of
seven wins in a row….
In
dropping this game we have to salute a good looking St. Mary’s
team. A team that is led in victory by Mickey Cleary’s 23
points; his three straight jump shots broke open a sparkling comeback
which our boys were beginning to put forth. All who witnessed
the contest will have to admit, Cleary was a paragon on the basketball
court.

Michael Cleary’s note:
What a kick to recall that 15 years before I ever thought of writing
a poem, someone wrote one about me! I was a dedicated jock in
a small parochial school that played David to public school Goliaths
for several years. A shooting guard in basketball and quarterback
in football, I played on 3 championship teams—two of them
undefeated. Ironically, several years later the high school closed
for lack of teaching nuns.
I
approach sports subjects in works such as “Football at Catholic
School in the Undefeated Season,” “Ex-Jock on Faith,
Free Throws, Follow-Through,” “Legend,” “The
Nature of Angels and Beauty.”
